because I want to talk about it

sometimes I read a book and before I can write the review for it, I want to discuss what I liked and didn't like in a less formal way.  with spoilers.  just because.

a lot of times these are one-sided conversations with myself, they used to be written down in a notebook and I referred to them as my "ID's" (Internal Debates) because I was just that sort of friendless person.

yeah I may be feeling a little morose right now, it'll pass there's just a lot making me kind of anxious because I can't do anything to fix the problems 100%.  just a lot of waiting around and making my concern known.  i'm not good for this sort of thing.

anyhow so I finished an ARC i picked up at BEA called Passion Play by Beth Bernobich.  The cover is what got me (pretty outfit, vivid red, faintly asian inspired background, shiny pointy knife) and its a 'fantasy romance' which I don't read too much of anymore.  Ah Maria V. Snyder mostly.  I think she qualifies for that title.

Its the first in a planned trilogy--first book due out in October 2010, second book in 2011 and third book in 2012, so I have quite a ways to go.  I wasn't sure what to expect beyond it sounded interesting enough for me to abandon an autographing line for an author I knew I loved to go and talk to this one.

I don't regret this decision.

Its fair to say this book disturbed me for a small part of it.  The MC is only 15 (almost 16) at the start of the novel.  By the end she is almost 18 I believe.  At the start she runs away from home and makes very bad judgment calls.  Trusts the wrong people.  Makes the wrong decisions.  spoilery AND disturbing few sentences right hereCollapse )

After that things get a little better, but I didn't like that her past is thrown in her face so often.  I understand why SHE is upset and anxious over it, but I couldn't understand why others threw it in her face.  why they looked down on her and treated her so badly because of it.  what sort of person does that?  Ilse went through a truly terrifying, traumatizing experience.  I'm shocked she was able to survive it, I don't think I could.  I'm not  a brave or resourceful person.  Up against what she was going against...I think I would have killed myself rather than endure what she did.

But I would feel pity for her.  I would seek to help her.  To befriend her and show her that things are better.  I wouldn't seek to make things worse for her out of some misplaced pettiness.

I got a little teary-eyed over the novel as well, especially at the end, when hard choices had to be made to make things better.  In a lot of ways this reminded me of the feelings I went through during Mistborn.  not that the stories are terribly similar.  Other than both being fantasies, with empires at stake, secret organizations promoting a regime change and some unique relationships formed...the two are very different in tone.  Mistborn was more epic, more involved and detailed.  That's just how Sanderson works.  Passion Play, despite also being quasi-political and detailed world building, wasn't as epic in scale I don't think.  Mistborn was talking about the fate of the WORLD, Passion Play was mainly concerned about the fate of two kingdoms.

Regardless of anything else I stayed up instead of sleeping to finish it.  I may regret it in the morning, but I have a feeling all kyle and I will be doing is sleeping anyhow since he is going into seclusion mode because of his mom.  I meanwhile am going to keep this calm act up.  no one needs my emotional and psychological issues getting in the way of progress.

a story

So here's the rough version of that story I was talking about the other day.
Just One TimeCollapse )

I'm fairly happy with the results.  Its very rough of course, but taking into consideration what mguibord  had said to me in the previous post, I wrote it in third person and tried to add little hints as to what was happening by adding Kane's running commentary about the memory in italics.  The ending transition is a lot more abrupt then I want it to be, and I think I could add a few more 'comments' by Kane in there, but all in all--there you have it folks.

let's catch up!

So I had a few days of fun!  Let's show off the pictures!

Monday night:

Des and Lisa slept over.  I made hamburgers, smiley fries and America funfetti cupcakes.  We watched an episode of The Big Bang Theory (the new one, me and Des that is) and when Lisa came over we ate, talked and then played Super Mario Bros for a wee bit.  Um.  Yeah that was epic times XD  The three of us are better at killing each other then anything else.

Tuesday:

We went up to the Asian Mart and got a Lotus Bun (Des), Cream Bun (me) and Royal Milk Kit-Kats (Lisa for Des).  Headed back to Barbero's for lunch, then to the train.

::flails:: why are train tickets so bloody expensive! (point in fact no one bothered to mention, until Lisa was almost at the house, that it would have been cheaper to go from her house to NYC. it just...slipped all of our minds.)

Anyhow we arrived in NYC and then had to find Alice's Tea Cup Chapter II where we would be meeting kiku  (aka: the Margie).  After much walking in the semi-wrong direction (omg why is Central Park so large) we arrived!  The place was sooo cute.  It was, obviously, Alice in Wonderland themed--with butterfly wings, glitter, quotes from the book, pictures and much more all over the place.  It was small and cozy and omg the cakes.

There's a 140 (or so) kinds of tea to choose from.  I got this one: Phoenix Dessert Blend (A marriage of Indian black tea, honey, caramel and vanilla.), the Margie got Alice's Tea (Our house blend of Indian black tea with Japanese green tea and rose petals. Smooth and subtle.) and...I'm actually uncertain which ones Des and Lisa got ;;-.-  I know they loved whatever they got, and it smelled delicious.  Have some pictures!
Des taking a picture of me taking a picture of her
the Margie sneaking pics of everyone's cups
My teapot, cup and warm chocolate cake
More of my cake--you know you're totally totally jealous Neil
My plate...five minutes later.

After Alice's we headed to Paley for the Jim Parsons Night Out.  The Good News is that we got there early enough to secure a chance at upgrading out tickets as well as buying the Margie a ticket!  The unhappy news was it cost more money ($10 a pop), so...I spent all my money to make sure we'd be in the same room as Jim Parsons (instead of the viewing theatre).  Honestly I don't regret it, as it made Des extremely happy and gleeful and I was so happy to have the Margie with us as well!

Have a couple photos of Jim:
and
Now here's a funny story.  Des was intent on finding the little Asian Lady who had helped us earlier so when she saw her she ran off to ask about the Margie's ticket.  As she turned her back who should walk through the door but JIM PARSONS.  He sees her bright red Flash shirt, is about to say something when the publicist pulls him away.  Meanwhile Des is oblivious.  Lisa and I are waving frantically at her.  I finally go over there and say 'Des, look behind you' she looks everywhere but at the person she should be seeing.  I'm like 'No des look' she doesn't get it so I finally turn her towards him and say 'LOOK DES' and she freezes up.

As it turned out he was 20 minutes late because he was told the wrong date--we were lucky he was there on time at all!  But that's why Des didn't get to get us kicked out by security tell him her joke or get a picture with him.

And because I promised I would do this, this is how the story really went:
Once Upon a time a lovely red-haired lass named Des was merrily skipping her way to talk to a nice lady.  Lo who should pass her by but her Prince in Dork Armor future husband Sir Jim Parsons.  Sir Jim tries to grab her attention but Des is all 'ho-hum I hear nothing' and frolics away, leaving poor Sir Jim--marriage proposal in hand--to cry silently of a broken heart.  Meanwhile Des' ladies-in-waiting are slapping their foreheads because Des can be really oblivious sometimes.

Moral of the story: friends don't let Des wander off by herself because then she misses the main event.

Back to point: So we are headed into the last row of the theatre that Jim Parsons is in, which delights Des to no end at all.  We're treated to a screening of an unaired episode (either next week's or the week's after they didn't say) that was all kinds of hilarity (I mean it) and then Jim Parsons came out!

It was a thorough and fun interview I have to say.  He's a really funny guy and oddly sentimental (he was teary-eyed over recounting bringing his 4 year old nephew to Sesame Street) and a little bit awkward (but in a good way).  You can see how some of Sheldon's mannerisms are his as well (tone inflections, body movements, the propensity to look at someone directly a touch too long).  He spoke about what i was like auditioning, some anecdotes about the set and coworkers, meeting fans and such.  He says he likes the 'perks' of being a star best (that is being able to appear on Sesame Street or Martha Stewart Show or whatever) and prefers interviews like what he was doing at Paley over the Talk Show circuit because he can talk at length about the show.

So it was good times.

We walked back to Penn, in the growing darkness, fretted over the Margie's safety for a while and then go on the train.  Des and Lisa were not happy campers on the train ride.  Got back to the station, headed to my house, headed to Des' house to drop her off, then we came back and Lisa went home while I watched 24 with my dad.

I'll discuss Wednesday/Thursday later!

Young Adult Fiction and Romance talk

its just as well I didn't do much, I got up out of bed and immediately fell sideways as my world tilted.  I'm still light-headed even after eating, light exercise (30 minute walk) and taking my vitamin.  Damn stupid weather I think my blood pressure is being whacked around again.

So because I wanted to stay still I read a bunch of posts about Young Adult Romance in today's culture.

Oh this will be fun let me tell you.  You know why I love pop culture meta-essays sooo much?  Because I can understand the stuff being tossed around for the most part.

[in which a girl reads]
: Why ya romance needs to change
this is what started my read-a-thon of posts.  It talks about how current bestselling YA books (such as Twilight, Hush Hush and Swoon are all perpetuating the Stalker Boy is My True Love Formula.  Admittedly this isn't a new formula, but thanks to Twlight's Edward and Bella its suddenly all the rage.

bookshop : Bad Romance (or, YA and Rape Culture)
I'd actually recommend looking over the journal in general, there are a number of meta essays of interesting note-worthiness.  Anyhow Aja uses Hush, Hush by bec_fitzpatrick  as her example.  I haven't read Hush, Hush, the premise didn't really appeal to me (though I do like the cover a lot), but practically all my bookblogger friends did read it (to varying feelings).  She has quotes, scenes and a lot of breakdown.

University of Fantasy: Hush, Hush: the designated love interest and gender relations in YA
If possible this blogger delves even further into why Patch and Nora is not a functional romance.  Added bonus for recc'ing Graceling by Kristin Cashore as a good alternative to how a romance should play out.

all 3 posts sort of feed into each other to varying degrees and as far as I could see there haven't been any trolls so let's leave it that way mmm kay?

I would argue I think that the case of Evernight is a little trickier since the first half of the book we are led astray by a pertinent fact about our narrator which is not revealed until the halfway point and then its also revealed that her parents kept her in a perfect bubble and that her family life is unusual in the society they belong to (to say the least).

Also I don't think its fair to compare Pride and Prejudice or books of that time period to books now.  Austen wrote the books as reflections of her society and social norms--Darcy being judgmental, rude, arrogant and dismissing Lizzie is pretty much how he was expected to act towards someone of lower standing financially, socially and connection wise.  Add to it her family was monstrous, or at least her mother and younger sister were, its not really surprising that his rational self would entirely reject the notion of forming an alliance with Lizzie.  his rational self was screaming 'Fortune hunter!  social climber! SHREW!' while his emotional self, which he closed off from influencing him as much as possible, was drawn to her.

So no I don't think that its fair to lump them in with Edward/Bella or Patch/Nora.  Darcy doesn't force himself on Lizzie--due to the nature of the Bingley/Jane situation they end up together often but he doesn't stalk her, and Lizzie gives him whatfor when he tries to tell her what to do.  when he proposes marriage, the first time, and is thwarted he goes away--instead of trying to force her to acknowledge things--and returns a more humble man for it.  He doesn't lie to her, doesn't try to kidnap her or lead her astray.

Anyhow that's just my two cents.  I'm off to read one of 5 books I've been looking forward to...

Supposed to be resting but...what the hell

Its the Holiday Season! I know oh no! Not yet!  Why is it happening already?  WHERE HAS ALL THE COWBOYS TIME GONE?!

::ahem::

So! In that spirit, and the fact that code_59kc is a greedy greedy girl fabulous friend with many posts of teh awesomeness (yah yah Prussia is awesome, but Korea invented awesome so is Prussia really Korea?  idk my meds make me looney) I stole this from her.

Because its better then staring at the ceiling and imagining I see unicorns dancing across it SHUT UP ARTHUR THIS IS NOT FOR YOU TO COMMENT ON

(1)
Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 unlimited 8D holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

(2)
Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

bet'cha all of you can guess at least ONE of these wishesCollapse )

I'm not sure how much of this makes sense since right now I have this nagging voice in my head telling me I'm doing it wrong.

Gorgeous Goth Guys & Girls Contest

This will sound a little weird, but my very first time coming across a goth in RL (real life) was in 2003 when I went to Dragon Con. Its a Science Fiction and Fantasy convention held in Atlanta, Georgia and I went for an entirely different reason, but ended up going to see this musician--Voltaire--in concert there.

Had no idea who he was, never even heard of 'goth rock' (as my friends called it)--all I knew was the guy was friggin' hot and he was singing a song called 'Bomb New Jersey'. I wasn't in love per say, but I certainly was in lust.

That's him to the left there--like I said friggin' hot!

Anyhow it wouldn't be until a while later that I found out who he was or that he was a 'Goth' (in a truer sense of the word then those goths I had at my high school that thought wearing black made them edgy). It would be even longer yet until I found that song I loved.

What does all this have to do with Prophecy of the Sisters? Michelle Zink, in association with a whole host of us Word Ninjas, is throwing a launch party and everyone is invited! As part of the party there's gonna be a boatload of contests (all sorts) and prizes to give away. Right here on Poisoned Rationality I'll be holding a 'Gorgeous Goth Guys and Girls' contest.

But Lexie, what ever do you mean? Gorgeous Goth Guys and Girls what?

The rules are simple--send me pictures (or links to pictures) or videos (or link to) of you, your friends, your parents--whoever at all (s'long as its someone you KNOW and don't go trolling for random folks on the internet) dressed in Gothic inspired clothing.

It can be Victorian Gothic, Modern Gothic (like Voltaire), Gothic Lolita, J-Rock Gothic, Steampunk Gothic...whatever! Just make it Gothic inspired (so don't be wearing pink...unless its a pink skull or something).

And don't worry you'll have plenty of time for this contest--it runs from Today (August 1st) til August 30th, a whole month!

What's the prize you ask?

Michelle Zink (the author in case you didn't know) will be sending the winner a Prophecy playlist CD, Hot Topic gift card, Prophecy bookmark, Prophecy magnet, signed Prophecy poster, nail polish, candy, choice of DVD between Wuthering Heights or Interview with a Vampire.

How's that for incentive?

A couple of tips--
  • Go to your local bookstore (Barnes and Noble or Borders or such) and they should have a magazine called 'Gothic Beauty' (I know all the ones around me do). Look at what's in style right now for inspiration!
  • Batgear Beyond will give you TONS of links to look for Gothic clothing and accessories. I use it whenever I need props or shoes fo rmy weird cosplays.
  • La Carmina is a site me and my friends go on to see the latest Gothic Lolita styles in Japan.
So get a move on! E-mail your entries and/or links to Lexie.Cenni (@) gmail.com and let me see your dark sides darlings!

The Girl

She is said to live in a perpetual dream world and rarely does she venture forth into reality.
